Park Street Streetscape “Part 2″

This Week’s Happenings in the Park Street District: Calendar, October 17-23
(take a look at the new calendar grid… see more events!)

It’s finally happening! Funding is available and the City of Alameda is proceeding with Phase 2 of the Park Street Streetscape project. The project area includes two sections of Park Street: Lincoln Avenue to Webb Avenue, and Central Avenue to San Jose Avenue.

Sidewalk Closed

"Closed to Thru Traffic Only. Access to Stores Remains Open!"

The new streetscape project is scheduled to begin in mid-October and be completed by March 2012. The scope of the project consists of the installation of new street trees, street lights, bike racks, bus shelters, parking meter pay stations, and accessible curb ramps, as well as the reconstruction of portions of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. “De-construction” work includes trenching in the parking lanes for electrical and irrigation lines, removal of old street lights and old trees, and demolition of sidewalk and curbs to accommodate electric pull boxes for the light poles.

There will be no work on the weekends. Construction work hours will be restricted to Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. The contractor will keep one lane of traffic open at all times but motorists may experience minor disruptions in traffic. There may also be minor increases in noise level and dust during construction.

Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project duration, as well as access to bus stops. Read the rest of this entry »

Classic Car Show Revs Up Park Street

This Week’s Happenings in the Park Street District: Calendar, October 3-9

Classic Car Show 2011 The 18th Annual Park Street Classic Car Show takes place this week on Saturday, October 8. More than 400 classic vehicles will be on display in Alameda’s historic downtown district — Vintage Show Cars, Roadsters, Coupes, Hot Rods, Antique Muscle Cars, and more. Food and prizes will be available and DJs will be spinning oldies from the ’50s and the ’60s. The free event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Classic cars of every description will line Park Street in Alameda’s historic downtown district between Encinal Ave and Buena Vista Ave. Most of the cars come from those magical decades — the ’50s and the ’60s. But there will also be plenty of classic roadsters and coupes from the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s along with muscle cars from the ’70s.

In addition to the cars, many of the businesses in the Park Street Business District will be open during the show. Visitors to the show are encouraged to “Shop Park Street” and peruse the unique collections of our fine stores and enjoy the tasty fare of our fabulous restaurants. Read the rest of this entry »
