Iconic Pampered Pup is a Tribute to a Father’s Dedication

Update: Happy retirement to Kit after 16 years of service! The new owner, Tony Yu, will officially take over on April 2, 2015.

Pampered Pup iconic sign on Park Street, AlamedaAmong the changes that have been taking place in the Park Street Business District this past month, people have been surprised to see that Pampered Pup has been closed for a few weeks. Many have asked what is happening to Alameda’s iconic restaurant… is it closing? has it been sold? is it being replaced?

In following up on these questions, we were sad to learn of the recent passing of the owner, Pak. His son is currently in town and explained that the family is making some upgrades to Pampered Pup as a tribute to his father’s work. Sam says the changes they are making are the things that his father had always wanted to do, but just didn’t have the time or the energy.

Recognizing that “The Pup” is a landmark on Park Street, Sam says the changes will be in keeping with the existing retro character of the hot dog place. Visits have been made to the Alameda Museum to find old photos, ensuring that design updates are authentic to the original style.

The following announcement was provided by Sam Yu, son of the owners of Pampered Pup:

Pampered Pup was established in 1967 and has been an unofficial landmark in Alameda since. The “Pup” is owned by our parents, Pak and Kit. With the recent temporary closure of the Pup, many have inquired when the restaurant will re-open and why it has been closed.

As many of our customers have noticed, the Pup is rarely closed. Even during the holidays like Christmas or New Year’s Day, our parents opened the Pup to make sure no hungry patrons would come and find us closed. However, Pak recently fought a difficult battle with cancer and passed away in May 2013.

Pak was a dedicated husband, father, and proud business owner. As an immigrant to the USA, both of our parents worked two jobs while caring for the three of us. After working hard for decades and being extremely frugal, they purchased the Pampered Pup from a fine lady by the name of Delores in the 1990s. The Pup was our father’s pride and he took on the duty of a store owner with dignity. Our father’s work ethic coupled with our mother’s sweet smile was a great match for a small shop.

Pak had much he wanted to do with the Pup, but was physically unable to tackle it when he became ill. However, even on days when he was especially sick, he still insisted our mother leave him at home so she may open the Pup and not disappoint the customers. With our father’s condition in mind, we urged them to sell the Pup so they could rest. After much consideration, our parents could not bear the thought of selling the store because of all the beautiful memories engrained in every inch of the Pampered Pup.

Pak was a loving husband and devoted father who was dedicated not only to his family but also to the store. We will be carrying his wishes forward by providing the very best hot dogs to our customers and making updates to the store.

In the coming weeks, we will be doing some light remodeling, which will not alter the Pup’s authenticity, charm, or history in Alameda.  The Pup will feature an upgraded menu, new quality hot dog options, and a renewed focus on serving our loyal customers in honor of Pak. Our father realized that he had quality customers and we do thank you all for your continued support.

Thank you for understanding and for your continued support. We are excited about the changes to come!
