Alameda Businesses Help Students to be “Equipped 4 Success”

Equipped 4 Success is a community-wide school supply drive to collect school supplies for low-income Alameda public school students. The goal is to collect enough school supplies to fill backpacks for 1,000 students (kindergarten through 12th grade) so that they can be ready to learn on the first day of school. To help the Alameda Education Foundation meet the goal, a number of businesses in the Park Street Business District are pitching in to host collection bins.

Education budget shortfalls mean longer lists of supplies that families must provide, and many just can’t afford it. Last year, 900 filled backpacks were distributed to students and more are expected to be needed this year.

The backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to low-income students served by the following organizations: Alameda Education FoundationAlameda Unified School DistrictAlameda Point CollaborativeAlameda Boys & Girls ClubHead StartGirls Inc., and Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and Families.

“Students need to be ready to go day one, with all the supplies they need,” says Bill Sonneman, president of the Alameda Education Foundation and a former principal.  “If a student falls behind, they may never catch up.”
