JaYing Wang and Rachel Gingold — two of the Bay Area’s finest art and craft professionals — started Artistic Home & Boutique in 2013. The business partners met through their adopted Chinese daughters and agree that “Opening the studio has changed our lives. We love the interactions with customers, and our daughters get to see (and participate) in making a creative business work.”

Artistic Home Studio Alameda InstructorsTogether with other instructors, JaYing and Rachel hold classes in glass arts (fused glass, stained glass), mosaics, and decorative painting techniques for furniture and the home. Additionally, they have a youth programs consisting of summer camps and after-school art classes. All classes are held in a stunning, light-filled 1100 sq. ft. studio with gabled and beamed 20-ft high ceilings (the space was originally a historic barn).

In the adjacent boutique, they sell custom-painted furniture, local artisan-made glass jewelry, as well as décor products to try at home, including Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan (Artistic Home is the main Annie Sloan ‘stockist’ for the San Francisco Bay Area).

JaYing and Rachel affirm: “Our mission is to make your home more ARTISTIC, one project at a time!”

Glass Art Workshops

Artistic Home Studio & Boutique, AlamedaJaYing Wang has been a mosaic artist since 1995 and an art teacher to children from 2002 to 2008 (as owner of the Children’s Art Studio in Alameda). For several years she focused on large mosaic mural commissions, and spending more time with her two daughters, while continuing to teach after-school art classes in many of Alameda’s schools. Her love of mosaics has evolved into a passion for glass arts in general.

A four-hour mosaic workshop led by JaYing at Artistic Home gives participants the opportunity to make a beautiful, hand-crafted item for the home, such as a step-stone, a planter, or a mirror. The ‘Ladies Night Fused Glass Jewelry and Chocolate’ workshop is very popular for making several pieces of beautiful fused glass jewelry — these sessions fill up fast. “Mothers and daughters particularly enjoy working together creatively,” says JaYing. Individual classes start as low as $30.

Some classes don’t even need to be booked in advance, such as the ‘Drop-In Fused Glass’ sessions. These are held Tuesday through Sunday and the staff will teach you how to use glass cutting tools and fusing techniques to produce any type of piece, from jewelry to Anthropologie-style glass knobs, to dishes. Artistic Home doesn’t charge a studio use fee for the drop-in sessions; instead, charges are by the piece starting at $16.

Paint Techniques Workshops

Artisitc Home Studio & Boutique, AlamedaRachel Gingold is an accomplished artist who has been painting for more than 30 years. She left her management career in technology in 2002 to pursue art full-time. Although she had been faux finishing for friends since the early 1990s, she expanded her art career to murals and hand-painted furniture, creating ‘Moonline Arts’, as well as teaching art to children. She is an active member of the International Decorative Artisans League (IDAL).

Rachel leads a variety of painting workshops, such as the ‘Trash to Treasure’ session where clients can bring a small piece of unloved furniture and transform it with Chalk Paint® into a treasure for the home, and ‘Chalk Paint® 101’ — a hands-on course in basic techniques using this acclaimed product.  “Participants range in age from teenagers upwards. We have quite a few retirees, including a woman who was an interior designer for 40 years and loves keeping her techniques up-to-date,” says Rachel.

Individual classes start as low as $40 for Stenciling & Decoupage. Class sizes are limited to eight people, so that everyone can get the maximum benefit from instructor and hands-on experience.

Art Parties

Artistic Home can provide private workshops for groups of friends outside of normal studio hours. The studio space is also available to rent for private parties and events. Birthday, bridal, corporate team building, girls night out… you think of it, they’ll help you host it!
