Find Your Way in Downtown Alameda for the 2nd Friday Art Walk

2nd Friday Art Walk Downtown AlamedaWhen is a Friday night better than any other Friday night in Downtown Alameda? When it’s a 2nd Friday Art Walk! (By the way, this month’s 2nd Friday is just a few days away.)

2nd Fridays are a monthly celebration of the arts and worth the experience. Whether your interest is in paintings, photographs, printmaking, sculpture, or mixed media, there’s something for everyone to enjoy while in Downtown Alameda on a 2nd Friday. Best of all, 2nd Friday Art Walks are totally free and guests can go from venue to venue at your own pace.

Local galleries and businesses throughout Downtown Alameda work hard to make 2nd Fridays an exciting and relaxing evening for the community. Studios throughout the district take the time to open their creative havens to the public. Artists make huge efforts to show fresh, new, and exciting works.

Studio 23 AlamedaYou’ll want to visit multiple galleries on 2nd Fridays to view amazing visual art alongside performance art, live music, DJ’s, and/or film screenings. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists and to learn about their creative process.

Most venues serve wine and light snacks; some provide live music or other entertainment. Local restaurants, shops, and coffee houses in Downtown Alameda also participate in 2nd Fridays by featuring changing art exhibits, special guest appearances, or creative dining experiences.

2nd Friday Art Walk at Studio 23 AlamedaThe 2nd Friday Art Walk is held every second Friday of the month. Activities are typically scheduled from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, but times may vary slightly at some locations. Be sure to check the event website for locations and schedules: http://fridayartwalk.com

You can also find official art walk maps at a number of Downtown Alameda businesses.

Artists Supporting Community, Local Business, and Local Art

Studio 23 AlamedaStudio 23 is a small independent art studio and community gallery space located just off Park Street. You’ll find it on the corner of Encinal and Oak, behind the old Lock & Glass building. The gallery is run by Wesley and Jessica Warren (aka Wes and Jess), two artists who have been creating art together for over 20 years.

Opening an art studio and starting the art group Alameda Artists in 2013 has led to several reoccurring group art shows happening in conjunction with 2nd Fridays: February’s “Eat Your Heart Out”, June’s Alameda Summer Art Fair, and October’s Black Light Art Show.

This September, prompted by Vintiq’s Steve Gray Digilio, they will be promoting “Art For Animals” where a portion of proceeds from the 2nd Friday art walk will go to Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS).   Read the rest of this entry »

Downtown Alameda’s Art & Wine Faire… In Pictures

Beer and Wine at Downtown Alameda Art & Wine Faire

The Downtown Alameda Business Association (DABA) is proud to bring the annual annual Art & Wine Faire to Downtown Alameda each year. We hope you, your family, and your friends were able to join us for a terrific weekend in Alameda’s downtown district.

We keep saying that each year is “bigger and better” and it’s true… each year does get bigger and better! This year saw the biggest turnout and the biggest smiles during the event’s span of 32 years. Even with the large crowds, people were calling it “mellow.” We think this is a testament to the smooth operations that makes it fun for everyone. And we’re happy you could be part of it.

We saw plenty of activity and fun throughout the weekend…

  • True Covers Tribute Band at Downtown Alameda Art & Wine FaireThousands of people were enjoying the huge selection of arts, crafts, and food vendors.
  • The four beverage stations were pouring beer and wine almost nonstop. (Thanks to Alameda Island Brewing Company and Rock Wall Wine Company, we think we have the best beer and wine selection in the Bay Area!)
  • People of all ages were kicking back and dancing to the lively music on our two stages. (Who can resist the music made famous by The Beach Boys, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, and Santana?)
  • Parents and kids were having a blast in the two kids’ areas while spectators had fun watching the kids roll around in those wacky waterballs.
  • Kid activities at Downtown Alameda Art & Wine FaireFolks were enjoying all of interactive activities scattered around the downtown district, including Alameda’s own The Dilly Dallies and Alameda String Academy
  • Lots of festival-goers were also taking the time to visit our local shops and restaurants.

To see what we are talking about, view more photos in our photo album on Facebook.

Our annual events mean a great deal to Downtown Alameda and the Downtown Alameda Business Association. Not only are we able to offer family fun and an opportunity for friends to reconnect in Downtown Alameda, but proceeds from the our street fairs are used to maintain and enhance the downtown district. Without your support of the annual Art & Wine Faire we couldn’t promote and maintain Downtown Alameda and the historic Park Street District as the vibrant downtown we all love. Find the Best Views of Alameda’s Fourth of July Parade on Park Street

Alameda July 4 ParadeOn July 4, be sure to find your way to Downtown Alameda to view one of the longest Independence Day parades in the nation. The Alameda Mayor’s 4th of July Parade is one of the best Fourth of July celebrations in the Bay Area and it starts right here on Park Street.

The Alameda parade boasts over 170 floats and 2,500 participants that traverse a 3.3 mile route across Alameda — from Park Street on the east end of the island to Webster Street on the west end. Beginning at 10:00am on the corner of Park Street & Lincoln Avenue, the parade first meanders down Park Street and then continues around the corner along Otis Drive.

Spectators enjoy a huge variety of hand-decorated flatbeds, antique cars, marching bands, dance troupes, cheerleading squads, dancing horses, bicyclists, musicians, clowns, and costumed characters. Performers come from Alameda and all around the Bay Area.

There’s also a 5K run and walk that follows the route of the Mayor’s 4th of July Parade. The R.A.C.E. starts at 9:00am — an hour before the parade — in front of the Bank of Marin (1416 Park Street).

The Alameda Mayor’s 4th of July Parade and race attract over 20,000 people and many of the spectators search out the best viewing spots along Park Street where parade entrants start off with lots of energy. The performances, cheering, and flag waving tend to be particularly exciting in front of the Judging Stand located at the intersection of Park Street & Alameda Avenue.  Read the rest of this entry »
