Power Box Art Contest: A Call for Artists to Beautify Alameda’s Downtown

Power Box Art in AlamedaAcross the country communities have been covering utility boxes with art to beautify their downtowns, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Alameda’s Power Box Art pilot program invites local artists to re-energize the utility boxes on their own streets.

Power Box Art, a partnership between Alameda Municipal Power (AMP), Park Street Business Association (PSBA) and Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) is seeking artists to design art for 10 utility boxes in the Park Street Business District. (The location of the transformers is available on the Power Box Art website, www.alamedamp.com/art)

Artists who live or work in the City of Alameda are invited to submit art that reflects the way the community can reduce its carbon footprint through:

  • Renewable power sources,
  • Cleaner transportation,
  • Recycling and reuse,
  • Being an Alameda local shopper,
  • Supporting local farmers, and
  • Water and energy conservation.

Ten designs will be chosen by a panel of judges. Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium, have their name displayed on the transformer, and will be featured in a Power Box Art show at Rhythmix Cultural Works. Most importantly, the 10 artists chosen will have their designs transferred to a large-scale vinyl adhesive film that will be wrapped around a transformer box for everybody to admire.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, June 16 at 5:00pm.  Winning designs will be announced on Wednesday, July 2. The transformers will be unveiled during a special “art walk” scheduled for Friday, September 12.

In the spirit of community, each transformer is sponsored by a local business. The 10 sponsors are: Alameda Collision Repair, Alameda Island Brewing Company, Alameda Natural Grocery, Berg Injury Lawyers, The Marketplace, Mason Management, Ole’s Waffle Shop, Rhythmix Cultural Works, Rich and Rose Krinks (Broker and Associate Realtor, Harbor Bay Realty), and Tucker’s Ice Cream.
